Wave Customers Raise £7, 428 for Marie Curie Cancer Care

Lewes Leisure Centre and Seahaven Swim & Fitness Centre in Newhaven have raised a total of £7, 428 for Marie Curie Cancer Care through the 2010 Swimathon – an increase of 53% on last year.

Both centres and their customers regularly support this event and this year recruited a fantastic total of 66 swimmers.  They competed in individual and team challenges completing either 60, 100 or 200 lengths.

Along with 515 other pools across the UK, an astonishing £2million has been raised for Marie Curie Cancer Care and The Swimathon Foundation.

Peter Crowley, Managing Director of Wave Leisure, said: “We are delighted that our customers have shown yet again their dedication and commitment to both swimming as an activity and the impact that activity participation can have.”

Through the annual Swimathon event Wave Leisure are able to continue to increase the number of participants accessing swimming along with increasing the number of times they swim and the length of time they swim each session.  Nationwide research shows:

  • 12% of participants started swimming following entry into Swimathon
  • 82% increased or maintained the number of times they go swimming each week
  • 91% increased or maintained the length of time they swim each session

Swimathon 2011 will be held over the weekend of 8-10 April 2011
