If you’re looking to get active at a gentler pace, Walking Sports are the perfect activity. Walking Sports restrict any kind of jogging, running or sprinting while the ball is in play and they’re strictly no-contact, creating a less pressurised environment for people to enjoy playing popular sports. Walking Sports are ideal for older people or those looking to enjoy playing sports no matter their fitness level.
In addition to a thriving Walking Football group in Seaford, this year Walking Football was introduced to Peacehaven and Lewes Leisure Centres, contributing to a 35.5% increase in participation. Seaford’s Walking Football team is run by volunteer Dick, who organises the sessions, referees the matches and encourages players with his favourite phrase; “Fun, fitness and friendship.” You can find out more about Dick and the benefits of Walking Football here.
Having seen the Walking Football team enjoying themselves, Wave volunteer Fran had the idea to bring Walking Netball to Downs Leisure Centre. “I came to Wave looking for a way of improving my physical and mental health. I saw how much fun the Walking Football team were having and I thought it would be great to establish a Walking Netball team," says Fran. "I have a background in Occupational Therapy and, as I am not working currently due to being a full time carer, I thought this could be a way of using my skills in a voluntary capacity. I’ve found it has improved my wellbeing at the same time."
As with Walking Football at Wave, the social benefits of Walking Netball are just as important as the physical ones. "We call ourselves a wiggle and giggle group," says Fran. "I like to keep fun, laughter and engagement at the heart of the session.”
The introduction of Walking Netball at Downs Leisure Centre in Seaford saw 151 attendances by 39 women aged 50 years and over between January and April 2019. Walking Netball runs at the centre every Monday from 1.45pm until 3.30pm. To find out more and take part, please get in contact with Downs Leisure Centre. Please note, Walking Netball sessions take a break over the summer with the last session taking place on Monday 22nd July 2019. Sessions will resume again on Monday 16th September 2019.
