Our team members Nikki and Izzy have been taking on our Train & Maintain challenge for a few weeks now and they’ve written another blog talking about their experience. Take a look at what they had to say about their half-way highlights, overcoming challenges and how Train & Maintain has made a difference already.
What has been a highlight so far?
Izzy: Moving up to lift heavier weights felt amazing, it was strange to pick up the weight I started with and think back to when I struggled to lift it!
Nikki: My highlights have probably been just how much I’ve been enjoying it. It’s been good to exercise my body and mind in a totally different way.
Have you faced any challenges? How did you overcome them?
Nikki: After a couple of weeks into my programme – around week 3, I felt I hit a bit of a wall. But then I thought to myself I’ve just got to log 3 moves a week to still be in the challenge, they don’t have to be intense. As I’d committed myself to the challenge, I didn’t want to let myself down.
Izzy: I really hit a block around 2-3 weeks in. I didn’t feel like I was seeing any progress and I was tired from the extra activity I was doing. I overcame the block by letting myself do a lighter work out – I did each set 2-3 times instead of 3-4 for example and used lighter weights. Allowing myself a less intense workout motivated me enough to get active. We all have good days and bad days - learn when to push yourself to your limit and when to be a bit kinder!
Has anything surprised you?
Nikki: Yes, that I’ve learnt a whole new way of exercising in the gym after sticking to the same routine for a long time. I’ve also had the confidence to take part in a Kettlebell class each week, which I’m enjoying.
Izzy: I started attending a martial arts class this month which has been really fun. When it came to doing press-ups, I managed them on my toes with no problem. At the beginning of this challenge I struggled to do any press-ups on my knees, so this was a really nice surprise! It shows that you’ll be reminded of your progress if you stop looking for it all the time.
The second half…
As they hit the half-way mark, Nikki and Izzy went for a second Personal Training session with Nikki Hughes-Faldo, our Group Fitness and PT Manager.
Nikki: I went into my second PT session feeling more confident than before. I felt stronger, fitter and more comfortable doing things in the gym. However, doing a new routine showed me how much I had got used to my previous routine as I really felt it afterwards!
Izzy: I got to use the cable machine for the first time in my second PT session. I’d always avoided this type of equipment as I felt like I wasn’t ‘good’ enough to use it – plus I had no idea what I was doing! But after trying it out with my trainer I feel confident enough to use it. However, I wasn’t sad to see Superman Planks didn’t make it into my second gym programme!
How are you feeling about the challenge?
Izzy: I’m really feeling the mental benefits from getting active. It lets me feel like I’ve achieved something for the day. Sometimes I catch myself looking forward to getting in the gym, especially if I’m having a hard day. I’m starting to enjoy using my workouts to offset some energy and focus on nothing else. I never thought I would be the person saying that!
Nikki: I’m still feeling motivated and can’t believe I’ve reached halfway. It’s definitely helped me maintain my exercising. In myself I’m feeling stronger and more aware of my body (aches and pains including!) My habits have changed in that I’m being consistent with exercising but also learning I don’t need to go all the time and the rest days are important for my body to repair.
What does the trainer have to say?
Nikki Hughes-Faldo, our Group Fitness and PT Manager, is in charge of our Train & Maintain challenge and has been watching Nikki and Izzy progress, as well as taking them for their personal training sessions.
“It has been so great to see Nikki and Izzy in the gym, not just during their one to one session with me but being able to also see they have continued with the sessions on the Myzone app and are more importantly enjoying them!”
“The aim for the start of their programmes was to focus on simple body movements and a plan that could be easily completed in the gym, studio, or even at home. Also, to demonstrate how affective and achievable these sessions are. The thought of the gym workout or working with a PT is so daunting for a lot of people, in part thanks to what we see in the media, but we have proven it doesn’t have to be.”
“Seeing Izzy and Nikki’s progressions already after just 5 weeks is fantastic and them wanting for more is even better! I think I may have created a monster or two 😊 Well done Izzy and Nikki”
