How long does it take to form a habit?
When it comes to creating a new habit, repetition is the magic word. Don't just take our word for it though. Here's the science bit!
In 2009, Phillippa Lally* investigated the process of forming habits in everyday life. She monitored 96 volunteers as they introduced a new behaviour to their daily lifestyle. On average, it took 66 days for the new behaviour to become a habit. In other words, the study showed that repeating a behaviour within a consistent context helps turn it into a habit.
The Train & Maintain challenge - training at least 3 times a week for 12 weeks - will help you do just that.
Keeping the time of day you come to the gym consistent (e.g. on the way to or from work) will help make it a part of your daily routine. And don't worry if you miss a session as the study showed this didn't materially affect the habit-forming process. So although we can't predict exactly how many days it will take to turn daily activity into a habit, we're confident if you stick to the 12-week Train & Maintain journey you'll see and feel changes that will help keep you going until it becomes second nature.
